CONNECTION EXPLANATIONS

ADSL - This is a standard broadband connection that provides a download speed of up to 8MBps and a upload speed of up to 448KBps. This connection is very common amougst low useage home customers who do not need an overly powerful connection. Although there are newer faster connections out there these are very in-expensive connections for the light surfer.

ADSL MAX - Slight improvement from ADSL it still provides you with up to 8MBps download speed but the upload speed has been increased to 832KBps. This is double the upload speed of the 'ADSL' connection. This will not make a difference to the speed of the pages displaying at your end but it can help with the speed at requests go out especially if you may have multiple requests at the same time. Currently in the UK this is the widest used connection in Homes and small business and is still fairly cheap to run.

ADSL 2 - This connection is increasing in popularity around the UK and allows you to have a connection speed of either up to 12MBps or 24MBps download and 1MBps upload. Although there are many people now using this connection it is still only a minority group of the country that actually have this connection and isn't current widely available around the country. This service is currently mainly only offered by providers using LLU (Local Loop Unbundling), What this means is rather than using the BT network to provide your connection the Internet Provider installs their own equipment at your local BT Exchange with their own connection back to their data center. The only BT equipment used is the 'last mile' of Copper line to your premisis. BT are now starting to provide ADSL 2 Services through the country by laying down a new fibre connection which will take years to complete and many areas will not currently have this available them. BT will only be offering rated speeds up to 20MBps Download.

ADSL 2+ - This connection is an extension of the ADSL 2 standard. It still has download speeds of up to 24MBps but the upload speed is increased up to 2.5MBps. This works almost identical to ADSL Connection however a couple of signals that are normally used for download speeds are reversed and used as upload instead. Doing this may cause your download speed to drop by up to 1 or 2MBps.

SDSL  - SDSL is based on the same technology as ADSL but instead of offering fast download and slow upload it offers the same speed both ways. For most Home users this is not needed and aimed more at Business users. An SDSL line can go up to 2MBps Download an Upload

Leased Lines (Fibre)  -  Leased lines are mainly aimed at Large Businesses and very expensive. They are dedicated lines so you will not be sharing your connection with other local homes or business. Leased lines have the flexibility of increasing or decreasing the speed as required. Currently this type of connection can have speeds anywhere between 1MBps and 10GBps (10000MBps) in both directions. These type of connections are also suitable for people who live far out of town and to far in distance from their local exchange to receive standard broadband connections, due to the technology this connection will not suffer speed loss of long distances unlike all the others listed.

Line Bonding -  Line bonding is still a very new technology which can be used with ADSL/ADSL Max / ADSL 2 / ADSL 2+ and SDSL lines. What this type of connection does is use 2/3 or 4 lines of either of the listed connections and join them together to provide one faster connection. For instance 4 ADSL connections bonded together could provide you of a speed of up to 32MBps Download speed and 1.7MBps Upload speed. How this works is every peice of traffic in either direction is split down and sent over the multiple lines simultaneously and then joined back together at the receiving end. The hardware will automatically adjust and run at the slowest connection speed out of the four lines. This type of connection also provides redundancy and if any one line should fail your internet connection will continue to work but at a slower speed.

The listed connections are the most common connections available today however if non of these suit your needs there are less common connection such as Dialup / Satelite / Ethernet / Wireless / 3G (Cellular) and Power Line. For more information please give us a call.
